Spiritual Wisdom Life Energy (aka Reiki)

We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.
— William Shakespeare, The Tempest, Act IV, Scene 1

I am on a life-long journey of discovery with my friends, Terri and Debby. We have known each other since before we were teens, and have stayed close despite the years and miles that have separated us during our lives.

Debby has been receiving reiki from a wonderful teacher for some time, raving about the results she gets from reiki and reflexology. Terri and I enjoyed hearing about it, but for some reason never tried it ourselves.

Until last year, when Terri was dealing with a health crisis and I was facing a major life change. We dove into the world of reiki with Debby’s beloved teacher, Mona. It all started with a suggestion, then a gift, and then it snowballed.

So much so that now we have all completed our own reiki training, Holy Fire Reiki Level II.

Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a Japanese word, loosely translated as “spiritual wisdom life energy.” Hence, the title of this week’s blog.

Reiki is a technique for healing in which the “ki” or “chi,” which is the life energy that flows through all things is channeled by a reiki practitioner. However, the practitioner is not guiding the life force or managing it; they are simply acting as a channel. The “rei” or spiritual wisdom, guides the “ki” where it is needed for the client’s highest good. After the practitioner has been trained to understand the process, and has been attuned to the reiki, all they need do is place their hands on themselves or another with the intention of healing. The reiki energies will being flowing automatically.

And because reiki is guided by spiritual consciousness, it can never do harm. The higher power knows what a person needs, and will adjust itself and the flow of energy to create an effect in the receiver that is appropriate for them.

The best part about reiki is that it never depletes the energy of the practitioner. The practitioner’s energies are not part of the healing session - so they are not used up. In fact, the reiki consciousness knows what healing the practitioner needs, too, such that both people in the process receiving healing, leaving them surrounded by loving feelings of well-being.

I wasn’t sure how (or if) it worked before I tried it, but the blissful feeling after my first session confirmed that although I might not be able to see the energy with my eyes, it is working and it feels completely different when it is flowing freely as compared to when it is blocked. I happened to meet my friend, Debby, for lunch after my first session, and for the first time in my life I saw an aura. It was a beautiful bluish-green undulating wave of energy around her head. I was so freaked out that I didn’t say anything at first, but we have since been practicing and seeing auras much more often. It is a beautiful sight!

The theory behind the healing nature of reiki is that we are all alive because of the life energy that flows through us. When this flow is balanced and free, we feel well, because the “ki” is animating and nourishing all the cells of our bodies. When the healthy flow of “ki” is disrupted by fear, anger, stress, negative thoughts, or any of a number of disturbances that we accept as normal.

In a healing session, the reiki flow works with these negative thoughts and feelings that have blocked our energy and releases them, lifting them up to a higher level of consciousness for processing, or simply melting them away.

Reiki is not massage, as there is no manipulation of muscles or movement on the body. Some reiki does not even include touching, but the Holy Fire Reiki includes placing hands in certain positions around the body’s energy centers to permit the reiki to flow where it is needed.
